If I could be anything in the world, I would want to be a musician. Unfortunately, in addition to having no formal training, I am completely tone deaf. My kids cover their ears when I sing in the car, but even their cries of pain do not deter me. I love to sing, I love music. While I will listen to any genre, in my old age, I am becoming a bigger fan of country. I heard it said that country music is about who we are, not who we want to be. In a perfect world, sure I’d like to be more like Brittany, clubbing with my girls and endangering the welfare of my children. In this world though, I am more the blue jean wearing, beer drinking, child-rearing wife. I am working toward being o.k. with my less than fabulous existence and music adds flavor to my little world
Today, five songs that make me happy for different reasons. I am not going the obvious route of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” which has the decidedly opposite effect on me. I also had a hard time leaving off “I Used to Love Her, But I Had to Kill Her” by Guns N’ Roses which oddly always makes me smile. It wasn’t easy but here’s my top five of the moment.
1. I’m Alive – Kenny Chesney with Dave Matthews
Kenny is my favorite and all his songs make me happy but this one nails the importance of being content.
“I’m alive. And, today you know that’s good enough for me. Breathing in and out’s a
blessing can’t you see. Today’s the first day of the rest of my life and I’m alive and well.”
Of course, that’s nice for Chesney. He lives on an island and is a multi-millionaire but you get the idea.
2. 3×5 – Jon Mayer
Despite his weird and unsettling womanizing tendencies, Mayer is a great lyricist. This one reminds you that life is messy and
we need to enjoy the ride. Perfect is overrated.
“… today I finally overcame trying to fit the world inside a picture frame.”
3. Love’s Divine – Seal
Pock-marked skin notwithstanding, Heidi must be ecstatic, always. If I am having a bad day, I blast this one and yes, sing it LOUD. Corny as it is, love is what makes a life and Seal’s voice is as sexy as they come.
“I had lost all of my belief you see, and realized my mistake. But time, threw a prayer to me and all around me became still.
I need love, love’s divine. Please forgive me, now I see that I’ve been blind.”
4. Chicken Fried – Zac Brown Band
If this song doesn’t make you happy, check your pulse. It is all about being grateful for the little things … the important
“It’s funny how it’s the little things in life, that mean the most. Not where you live, what you drive or the price tag on your
clothes. There’s no dollar sign on a peace of mind, this I’ve come to know. So if you agree, have drink with me, raise your
glasses for a toast.” l love any reason to raise a glass.
5. Sunshine – Matt Costa
This is a strange one. It has the beat of the Brady Bunch band and is about the sun but somehow manages to slide the
inevitability of death in between its “sha la la’s”. Goth as it may sound, the fact that we are all going to die makes me realize
that despite any hardships, we might as well have some fun while we are here.
I can’t write any of the words because it will depress you. It’s one of those things you have to hear for yourself.
